įrom March 1, 1990, the magazines were made available at no cost, on a freewill donation basis in the United States, with the stated purpose of simplifying their Bible educational work and distinguishing themselves from those who commercialize religion. The Watch Tower Society supported Swaggart in the case, arguing that the perceived sale of religious literature should be exempt from taxation. On January 17, 1990, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled against Jimmy Swaggart that sales of religious literature were subject to taxation, which introduced ambiguity into the formerly tax-free practice of suggesting a particular donation in exchange for the magazines. For example, in the United States, the suggested donation per issue was $0.05 in 1950, gradually increasing to $0.25 in 1989. Until March 1990, Awake! was available for a small charge that varied over time and in different countries. The Golden Age was initially available for $1.50 (equivalent to $25 in 2022) per year on a subscription basis. The magazine is distributed by Jehovah's Witnesses in the course of their public ministry including door-to-door canvassing, approaching people in public places, given informally to acquaintances and professionals, or left as reading material in waiting areas. Awake! has a worldwide circulation of 31,460,000 copies of each issue and is available, in selected languages, online in various digital formats. The magazine is printed in nineteen countries. Many issues claim that mankind is living in the end times. Īwake! contains articles on general interest topics such as nature, geography, health, family life, and also the Bible and biblical history, and is overseen by the Writing Committee of the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses. Chryssides notes that some articles "were opposed to orthodox medicine", particularly against vaccinations, theories about germs and the use of aluminum cooking utensils, "and recommended alternative methods of health care and remedies". The Golden Age outlined its primary aim in its first issue, stating, "we will point the people to the clear and indisputable evidence in the light of present-day events, disclosing the divinely expressed remedy for the reconstruction of human affairs that will bring the desire of all nations, assuring to the people life, liberty and happiness." The magazine also contained articles about "social, political, and economic issue and was not confined to purely religious matters". In 2022, publication was reduced to one new issue per year. As of January 2016, it was published every two months, and was further reduced to three issues per year as of January 2018. From January 2006, the magazine was published monthly. Until 2005, Awake! was published semimonthly in major languages (on the 8th and 22nd), monthly in many languages, and quarterly in a few languages. When Jehovah's Witnesses' belief regarding the "generation" of 1914 was changed to a less literal sense, the aim was restated as, "this magazine builds confidence in the Creator's promise of a peaceful and secure new world that is about to replace the present wicked, lawless system of things". (Autobiographical articles credited to individual members about their experiences and circumstances occasionally appear.)įrom 1982 to 1995, each issue of the magazine included a mission statement which stated, "this magazine builds confidence in the Creator's promise of a peaceful and secure new order before the generation that saw 1914 passes away". The magazine's editorship then became anonymous. it is time for you to awake out of sleep: for now is salvation nearer to us than when we first believed". On August 22, 1946, the magazine was renamed Awake!, drawing its new title from Romans 13:11 ( ASV): ". On October 6, 1937, the magazine was renamed Consolation and continued to be published biweekly until July 31, 1946. Woodworth was editor of the magazine, and later went on to serve on the boards of several corporations of Jehovah's Witnesses. It was founded for use in the Bible Students' new door-to-door ministry, though the founder of the movement, Charles Taze Russell, had indicated in his will that the Watch Tower Society would not publish any periodicals other than The Watch Tower. The magazine was originally published bimonthly from October 1, 1919, under the title The Golden Age. The Golden Age magazine, November 21, 1934

While it doesn’t appear that Apple has released an update to solve this problem at this point, several Apple Support reps found a way to fix the issue in the short term. How to fix Apple News download bug in macOS Big Sur If you’re not sure if you’re Mac is affected, you can keep an eye on Activity Monitor or use a third-party app like Little Snitch to find out. Notably, even for users who have cable or fiber internet, ISPs often cap data and usage this big is pushing people over their limits and causing overage fees.Īnother important point is that this bug could be affecting a lot more people than it appears since there’s nothing that would tip you off to go looking for it unless you’ve hit your data cap or regularly monitor your download/upload activity. Several dozen other users have chimed in that they’re seeing the problem too with another person noting they’re seeing around 60GB of downloads daily from the same Apple News process. Both have valid signed certificates by Apple according to Little Snitch. So I installed Little Snitch on both machines to monitor traffic and in just a couple days the newsd process on the iMac downloaded 375GB and the Mini downloaded 130GB.Īnd specifically the downloaded traffic occurred with hostnames apple.news and c.apple.news. Looking at my router’s activity monitor I noticed that both my 2017 5K iMac and 2020 MacBook Air (M1) had significant amounts of unexplained network activity. You can use it to check the state of the. I was notified by my ISP that I was close to using my monthly allocated download limits in just the first few days of the month. Macs Activity Monitor is a built-in utility that works to monitor all the ongoing processes at the current time. Paul noticed that on macOS Big Sur, an Apple News app process called newsd was downloading huge amounts of data in the background. The Apple News download bug was raised on the Apple support forums at the end of December by user paulfromminnetonka (h/t Nate). While Apple hasn’t issued a patch to the app itself, there is another way to fix the Apple News download bug that’s causing background downloads of up to 60GB+ a day. The Apple News app seems to have a flaw in macOS Big Sur that’s causing very large background downloads for some users. When you check the Activity Monitor on your Mac, you can discover that there is a process that is called WindowServer and it is always taking a lot of CPU power. While it is mostly an extension of dict rather than a modification of behaviours already defined in dict, this isn't true for. The dict class is "open for extension, closed for modification" - if you wish to modify some of the prepackaged behaviours of a dict, you're advised to inherit from or collections.UserDict instead.Ĭollections.Counter, however, is a direct subclass of dict. Then, surely this class definition (and all others like it) violates the contract specified by object? object and Foo cannot be used interchangeably, as object accepts exactly 0 parameters to its constructor, while Foo accepts exactly 1.Īs Raymond Hettinger tells us, the Python dictionary is an excellent example of the open/closed principle. With this in mind, how can any python classes that accept a nonzero number of parameters for their constructors be said to comply with the LSP? If I have a class Foo, like so: class Foo: When called, it accepts no arguments and returns a new featureless instance that has no instance attributes and cannot be given any. But the docstring of object includes this line: I'm trying to wrap my head around the Liskov Substitution Principle so that I can write better, more object-oriented code.Īs we know, in Python 3, all custom classes implicitly inherit from object. As such, my knowledge of theory is a little weak. I've taught myself Python over the past year-and-a-bit, and would consider myself an intermediate Python user at this point, but never studied computing at school/university. As the pandemic continued, the government instituted a winter lockdown that was the most stringent yet, banning youth under 14 from meeting with more than one person outside the family previous lockdowns had exempted them. German politicians during the pandemic have been concerned mostly with the health of older and vulnerable adults, say child advocates, while downplaying the social and emotional needs of children. “Once children have learned and mastered this superpower, they can solve any difficult situation they are put in.” Frim, who lives in the central German town of Lollar. “In a situation like corona, you must have resilience – the ability to deal with change,” says Ms. But seeing gaps in support, citizens have stepped up in new ways during the pandemic to look out for children’s emotional needs. Germans expected the government to watch out for their kids. Over the summer we’ll consider other reparations issues and locales.Building community is hard work, but it might be the fulcrum that lets us balance looking back and moving forward. Treating people well comes with thinking of them that way.Having achieved this, the entire community experiences abundance, “like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.” It earns the name “repairer of the breach” and can “build the old waste places.”If today’s debate over reparations builds community, that sounds like progress to me, whatever decision is reached.Today’s issue, dedicated to reparations, looks at slavery, forced assimilation, and territorial dispossession – in the United States, Barbados, and Canada. And behind those good actions, Isaiah indicates, are good attitudes – compassion and humility. People feed the hungry, free the oppressed, undo heavy burdens. We have to move forward, somehow. To try to understand what might promote that, I turned to the world’s most-read book, the Bible. This phrase in Isaiah 58 piqued my interest: “repairer of the breach.”Here, the repairer isn’t a carpenter or mason but a caring community. That’s what researchers working with Saint Louis University are doing to learn about those enslaved by Jesuits at the school.Yet no amount of looking back can recompense historical harms. We can’t go back and undo the horrors of the middle passage or the sundering of families at slave auctions. What restoration is possible centuries later?A first step can be looking back and taking an honest accounting of the past. That’s where the hard work happens to restore, renew, make whole. But the shorter word it comes from – repair – strikes me as even bigger. As a noun, reparations suggests that a decision has been reached about concrete actions to redress past wrongs. As a verb, repair is a process. The Imperva security solution is deployed as a gateway to your application and provide out-of-the-box protection for buffer overflow attacks. Request demo Learn more How Imperva Helps Mitigate Buffer Overflow Attacks When an organization discovers a buffer overflow vulnerability, it must react quickly to patch the affected software and make sure that users of the software can access the patch. Security measures in code and operating system protection are not enough. At a functional level, an SEH overwrite is achieved using a stack-based buffer overflow to overwrite an exception registration record, stored on a thread’s stack. It thus prevents an attacker from being able to make use of the SEH overwrite exploitation technique. Structured exception handler overwrite protection (SEHOP)-helps stop malicious code from attacking Structured Exception Handling (SEH), a built-in system for managing hardware and software exceptions.Data execution prevention-flags certain areas of memory as non-executable or executable, which stops an attack from running code in a non-executable region.Typically, buffer overflow attacks need to know the locality of executable code, and randomizing address spaces makes this virtually impossible. Address space randomization (ASLR)-randomly moves around the address space locations of data regions. In addition, modern operating systems have runtime protection. How to Prevent Buffer Overflowsĭevelopers can protect against buffer overflow vulnerabilities via security measures in their code, or by using languages that offer built-in protection. Languages such as PERL, Java, JavaScript, and C# use built-in safety mechanisms that minimize the likelihood of buffer overflow. Mac OSX, Windows, and Linux all use code written in C and C++. What Programming Languages are More Vulnerable?Ĭ and C++ are two languages that are highly susceptible to buffer overflow attacks, as they don’t have built-in safeguards against overwriting or accessing data in their memory. Heap-based attacks are harder to carry out and involve flooding the memory space allocated for a program beyond memory used for current runtime operations. Stack-based buffer overflows are more common, and leverage stack memory that only exists during the execution time of a function. However interestingly, I've noticed that this finale seems to play out better with viewers who have children, and this is a key point here. Now the fact that the silver giants were defeated by an emotional overload has had alot of folk rolling their eyes and muttering about a sentiment over sense RTD style ending. So then, moving on from silver rats, the other issue for this Spoiler Zone is the possible niggle I mentioned in the previous review, which I can now reveal concerns the final confrontation with the Cybermen. The new design is a nice synthesis of the previous versions, but with a rather pleasing though somewhat disturbing twist - a set of very organic and nasty looking teeth! Not only did the reveal of these biological components provide a decent shock for Cybermat lovers old and new but also was a rather well thought-out addition, as the Cyber-race are flesh and steel cyborgs after all.Īnd I think it safe to say these little beasts have proved to be a big hit, and not only with old fans who are delighted to see them back in a cool new form, for it looks like a toy Cybermat will now be top of many children's Christmas lists this year *. So then, it was really only a matter of time before they made a reappearance in the new series - they'd been mentioned in The Almost People and played a part in the adventure game Blood of the Cybermen, so the stage was set to bring to a new audience. However the Cybermats would make reappearances in various Doctor Who audio dramas, novels and comics - evidently the concept of the Cybermen having these quasi-animals, and perhaps those googly eyes, hold a deep appeal. Anyhow, moving swiftly on! The Cybermen would return to plague to the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Doctors, but sadly they no longer brought their pets with. Yes, I know, they do now look like some species of hideously prehensile martial aid! I'm not sure I should mention that their prime function in this story is spreading diseases. However Tom Baker did encounter them once in his first season in Revenge of the Cybermen& and the Cybermats were back too, albeit with a radical redesign. In fairness, however this wasn't due to the Cybermats being an unpopular creation, but due to the fact that the Third Doctor never tangled with the Cybermen (although one of the silver giants did appear in a cameo appearance as a denizen of the Miniscope in Carnival of Monsters and this Doctor did eventually battle them in the 1980s reunion story The Five Doctors).Ĭyber-appearances were thin on the ground too during the Fourth Doctor's reign. However despite an upgraded design (most notably the eyes were made, well, a little less googly), this was the last time we were to see them for quite some time, although apparently they were originally pencilled in to appear in The Invasion too. Well there's not too much to add to the spoiler-free review, however there are a couple of items worthy of comment!įirstly, and perhaps most importantly for old school Who fans, was the return of the Cybermats! Now for those of you who don't know, these little cyber-infiltration units first appeared back in the Second Doctor era, making their début in the classic adventure Tomb of the Cybermen.Īnd despite looking insanely goofy with their googly eyes and oh-so-1960s antennae, the little critters proved such a hit that they quickly made a second appearance in The Wheel In Space. And given how overly convoluted and rushed The Wedding Of River Song turned out to be, it makes one wonder if Closing Time should have been scrapped in favour of a traditional two-part finale.DOCTOR WHO 6.12 - Closing Time Spoiler Zone Overall the whole episode is very forgettable, a bit of filler before the Series 6 finale. but it's also horribly cliched and just feels very bland on a rewatch. Yes it's cute that the power of love for little baby Alfie is what wins the day for The Doctor and co. In fact Corden and Matt Smith's comedic chemistry is about the only thing the story has going for it.Īside from bringing back the Cybermats from the classic series, the story offers nothing new for the Cybermen, who are defeated by one of the most over-used plot devices from the Steven Moffat era - love. In fairness the Gavin And Stacey star turned talk show host is hardly at fault for the episode's shortcomings. After first appearing in Series 5's The Lodger, Craig Owens (Corden) is reunited with the Eleventh Doctor as the pair investigate a Cybermen invasion taking place at a nearby department store. |
